Merge Across only works for selections across columns, not rows. It does not automatically center the data.

  • Merge Across – this will merge the selected cells into one cell from the leftmost cell across the selected cells (if cells to the right of the leftmost cell in the selection contain data, it will be removed).
  • Merge & Center – this will merge the selected cells into one cell and center the data from the upper leftmost cell across the selected cells (if cells to the right or below the upper leftmost cell in the selection contain data, it will be removed).
  • If you are want to merge a title across the top of a worksheet, this is usually the best choice. This command is available through the Format Cells dialog box. It's usually better to use Center Across Selection rather than Merge Cells because Excel will not merge the selected cells into one cell, it will simply center the data. You will not be able to sort or filter a range with merged cells. If you have longer headers in lists or data sets, it's best to create shorter headers in single cells above the associated data. Merged cells cause problems in lists or data sets as Excel will have difficulty associating data with merged headers or merged cells in the data with the correct headers. If there is data to the right or below in the cells that you are merging, a dialog box appears warning that Excel will keep the upper left values and remove other data. If you merge cells with text, only the text in the upper leftmost cell will be used and text in cells to the right (and below) will be removed.
